The World’s Best Outdoor Ads from the 2012-2013 Cannes Lions Festival showcased advertisements that grabbed audience’s attention through their innovative and creative designs. On average a person will only see a billboard for 2 to 3 seconds, so your message must be brief but still have enough impact for your audience to remember. However, something that is advantage to those seeking outdoor advertisements is that you can customize the placement of your billboard; which is helpful for increasing the frequency for your audience to cause more impact. One of the winners of the Cannes Lions Festival for their outdoor advertisement was IBM for their ‘Smarter Ideas for Smarter Cities’ campaign with the Ogilvy & Mather Agency.
The ‘Smart Ideas for Smarter Cities’ campaign used three types of billboards that functioned as a bench, a shelter and a ramp over stairs to engage their audience and make small improvements to the cityscape. Their goal with this campaign was to use these small improvements to the cityscape to make cities smarter through technology. The trick was providing a convenience that was unavailable before, but is simple to implement and use.
The campaign asked for those with smart ideas for their city to join the conversation and share ideas on an online forum. The outdoor campaign then transitioned into an interactive marketing campaign providing a place for all doers, thinkers, problem solvers, creators and dreamers to share ideas, videos, photos and links for a positive change. This forum is also a great place for city leaders to gain insights on making better decisions, resolving problems proactively, and coordinating resources more effectively.
The People for Smarter Cities site is a great example of innovative, creative and interactive advertising. At OAI we constantly look for new ways to inform and advertise for our customers, and we commend both IBM and the Ogilvy & Mather Agency for their campaign’s ingenious route to improve cities with simple innovations for better solutions.
